Where Did All the Gold Go?

In the first and second versions of Loose Change Dylan absurdly claims that $167 billion of gold was stolen from the World Trade Centers. After finding out that he flunked economics in high school, this is starting to make more sense. In "Loose Change: We still can't get the facts straight" this is down to a measly $1 billion. His facts and logic, however, are still wrong, they just go from absurdly wrong to a mere stupidly wrong.

It is actually kind of interesting to compare the parts side by side, to see how his little brain works.

From LC2:

One of the world's largest gold depositories was stored underneath the World Trade Center. In 1993 the value of the gold was estimated at one billion dollars, rumored to be owned by Kuwaiti interests. When the World Trade Center was destroyed, the amount of gold "far exceeded the 1993 levels. The gold was finally recovered in its entirety in late 2001. Or was it?

And now from LC 2 Service Pack 1:

CNS news reported on September 12th 2001, that at the time of the first World Trade Center bombing in 1993 the complex was storing at least $1 billion worth of Kuwaiti gold underneath World Trade Center 4. However, the amount that was stored on September 11th, 2001 has never been publicly disclosed. Only that it far exceeds the 1993 levels.

Well at least they report a source this time, you can read the CNS news story here. It is rather ironic to see all these avowed Bush hating liberals cite far right news sources, when it fits them.

In any case, in V2.0 the gold is "recovered in it entirety", now it is not. I guess it was derecovered.

Do-over Dylan continues, in V2.0:

On November 1st, 2001, the Timesonline reported that a large amount of gold was discovered in the wreckage of the World Trade Center. Mayor Rudolph Guiliani announced that more than $230 million dollars was recovered from Ground Zero. However, the Comex metals trading division was storing gold bars for the Bank of Nova Scotia, Chase Manhattan Bank, The Bank of New York, Hong Kong, and Shanghai Banking, totaling $950 million dollars. And that's just one company. Rumor has it that over $160 billion dollars in gold were stored in the World Trade Center.

At least in V 2.1 he drops the silly $160 billion rumor at the end. The rest of the paragraph is unchanged though, and just as unsupported as it was originally. There is no source given for this, and there is absolutely no reason to believe there was any gold missing. I mean, think about, don't you think the banks would notice?

Dylan continues:

So where did all the gold go? Remember the gold that was found in November, 2001? Reuters reported, that it was discovered in the back of a 10 wheel truck, along with several cars in a delivery tunnel underneath World Trade Center 5. No bodies were recovered.

He then goes on to tell an elaborate story of thieves trying to escape with the gold in this truck. This lie is repeated verbatim in the "recut" version. The only problem is, this isn't what the Reuters story said, it never was, and it isn't today. Here is the actual text from the story, reprinted on a conspiracy website, but I looked it up on Lexis-Nexis and this is correct.

Officials finally reached the trove Tuesday after removing a 10-wheel truck and several cars that had been crushed by the debris. No bodies were recovered. More than 100 armed officers watched the workers. The contents of the vaults had to be removed because authorities need to demolish the building.

The gold was not in the back of the truck, the truck and the cars had to be removed in order for them to get to the vault. And why wouldn't there be a truck and cars there? It is a delivery tunnel. Once again, a little creative editing by the truthers.

Well, there is always Loose Change: Version 2 Service Pack 2

Here's that "conspiracy" site you're referring to. Funny how I never see you guys going after Hoffman, too hot to handle maybe?

There are literally thousands of conspiracy websites out there, if we attempted to cover them all we would have to go back to the Illuminati for more resources, and the site would get quite confusing.

I know that, but you guys always pick on the weakest links. Hoffman's site is the best one of the 9/11 revisionist sites, that's where your efforts should go if you really are interested in "debunking" revisionists efforts. But the way I see it, you only select the people that look a bit odd and might write a bit eccentric. I mean, you guys have a massive hard on for Fetzer right? There’s thousands of revisionist out there that don’t fit the "easily debunked" mold you guys seem to be attracted to.

There's zero that "don’t fit the 'easily debunked' mold", because they all base their theories on the same incorrect information, assenine assumptions, and lunatic logic. It doesn't matter that Hoffman can phrase his arguments a bit better, or that he stays away from some of the whackier ideas, because he still makes the same flawed arguments, and still reaches the same wrong conclusions. We could tear apart his theories just as easily as we do with any of the other CT whackos, but he'll have to get in line.

I'll admit, Fetzer is an easy target. He spues off quotes he has no background in, that are 99% of the time false, but more annoyingly he does it with such conviction that it just begs to be torn up....

As for Hoffman, NESNYC is right, only in that amongst the CTers he is well versed, does not "Spue" like Fetzer, and seems open to reason. However, he still patchworks things together to form the puzzle picture he wants.

I still think, the boys here and at JREF could tear his shit appart.

As for the gold...it is almost beyond comment. It has been debunked so many times, I am amzed they included it at all.

Uh, nesnyc, they're all weakest links.

It's like saying David Icke is a weaker link than Whitley Streiber in terms of aliens among us.

We pick on Loose Change, and to a certain extent the "Scholars" because they are the most prominent members of the conspiracy movement. Why should we waste time talking about figures in the movement that nobody outside your circle has ever heard of, just because you think they are smart?

As for being selective about evidence, this is how conspiracy theorists work. Why do you concentrate on the one or two witnesses who aren't sure a plane crashed in Pennsylvania, instead of interviewing the hundreds of rescue workers, investigators, lab techs etc who handled the wreckage of the plane and the bodies?

Then your "mission" really is not about the truth but about making people look bad as I suspected. I always knew that was your real motives but now that you have admitted it; we can take your words on the matter as simple entertainment.

Wow surprising nesnyc just reads what he wants.

The point of this site is to inform those who have come across Loose Change and the Scholars - THE MOST VISIBLE PARTS OF THE CONSPIRACY NUTS. The average person isn't going to come across the "better" parts of the movement.

Nesnyc projects more than anyone I've ever seen.

He believes myths, yet says when people believe in the reality of situation they believe in myths.

When they use logic, evidence, and reason to support a conclusion they have their heads up their asses - but when he only uses his biases and prejudices to judge material he's in the right frame of mind.

The average person isn't going to come across the "better" parts of the movement.

In the case of Steven Jones, he states that Hoffman's work opened his eyes a bit. Although distorted in some instances, a lot of Hoffman's work is cited in "nutter's" articles. You should really go after the source instead of the people and their reputations. That is, unless you're afraid of uncovering uncomfortable truths.

Well maybe that's why I put him there?!?!? He's a condemned man after all. When the Zionist war machine demolishes his country, he will be no more...

You never did answer James question Nessie. Why do you and the truthers ignore hundreds of witnesses and only concentrate on one or two. Ironic that you also ignored quoteing that post but quoted from the others after it. Or are teh J00os making you ignore it?

Not surprising a guy who thinks Hitler was a Zionist and that WW2 was a set-up (easily the craziest and least supported thing I've ever heard) would think Mahmoud and the tyrannical ayatollahs are just victims.
